Thiruvathira of Dhanu Masam – A Ladies only festival – celebrating the “Birthday” of Bhagawan Shiva. A vibrant and culturally rich festival, it is steeped in tradition and joy. This festival is marked by the iconic Thiruvathira Kali, where women perform a graceful and synchronized dance around a traditional lamp, embodying feminine grace and strength. The dance is accompanied by melodious Thiruvathira kali songs, which often narrate tales from Hindu puranas, adding a spiritual rhythm to the celebration. A significant aspect of Dhanu Thiruvathira is the Thiruvathira Noyambu, a religious observance where women fast and prepare special foods. These vegetarian dishes include delicacies like koova payasam (arrowroot pudding) and puzhukku (a mix of tubers and coconut), which are shared among family and friends, emphasizing community bonding and devotion. Through these traditions, Dhanu Thiruvathira not only preserves cultural heritage but also fosters a sense of unity and spiritual reflection.
