Vishu is noted for its solemnity, characterised by family time, preparing for Vishukkani with items that are considered auspicious, harvest produce and ofcourse Bhagawan Krishna. Malayalees seek to view the golden blossoms of the Indian laburnum (Kani Konna), money or silver items, cloth (kodi alakkiyathu), val kannadi (a type of mirror that is also a representation of the divine Goddess), rice and other harvest products. The day also attracts fireworks, play by children, wearing new clothes (Puthu Kodi) and Sadya, comprising a mix of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items. No Vishu is complete without Vishu Kai neettam and following that tradition an elder member of our OHM NZ community gives the kai neetam to all the young ones.
